Research summary
We want to develop a large-scale database for bone health in cancer patients. Collecting patient data will allow us to better understand the risk factors and high-risk groups for fractures, enabling us to provide the best diagnostic and treatment options to patients.
There are risk factors for developing certain cancers (e.g., smoking, alcohol, weight) that can also increase the risk of breaking a bone. Other reasons include the fact that some treatments for cancer can reduce the strength of bones (for example steroids and certain hormone therapies) or directly affect the bones to cause fractures (for example pelvic radiotherapy). Finally becoming unwell or having reduced mobility (ability to get around) as a result of cancer or its treatments can also have an effect.
Although we know there is an increased risk of breaking bones for those patients with cancer, we do not fully understand why this is the case or the risks for this in each individual. We also do not know whether the treatments to prevent fractures that work in patients without cancer, will work in the same way in those that do have cancer. These important questions are best addressed by collecting routine information (real-world data) over time on lots of patients so that we can build up information that is more relevant to patients and their specific situation. We are hoping to collect this data on 200 patients to create a large-scale database of information and determine the risk factors that predict the risk of breaking bones.
