Research summary
Body Aspect have been providing a 3D body scanning service to NHS organisations since 2003, as part of a breast assessment service, and during that time have scanned more than 2000 patients.
This project aims to investigate the potential use of 3D body scanning technology within the field of eating disorders. This pilot will enable clinicians to assess how the combination of 3D image capture and image assessment software might be used to identify, quantify and monitor body image issues.
The study will involve participants with eating disorders, who will be selected by clinicians as suitable. These would typically be patients who would have undertaken body image exercises as part of their treatment programme.
The participants will use Body Aspect's Image Assessment Software to create realistic 3D body models of how the particpant thinks they look and how the participant would like to look. Participants will also be scanned using the SizeStream 3D Body Measurement System which will capture an actual 3D image of the participant.
The software will be used to compare the actual image against the perceived and ideal images, both visually and in terms of volume measurements.
The particpants will fill in a questionnaire about their experience of the exercise.
