  • Research summary

Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) are a means of collecting information on the effectiveness of care delivered to NHS patients as perceived by the patients themselves. There is consensus that there is currently no PROM that adequately measures quality of life and recovery for people with mental health conditions, or that is culturally appropriate. A study has been financed by the Department of Health to produce a PROM on recovery and quality of life (ReQoL) to be used with adult service users with mental health problems, except dementia.

The current study aims to assess the unvalidated ReQoL questionnaire's face and content validity with BME service-users. The study aims to establish whether the questions are translatable into Urdu and Polish, and if these questions are then comprehensible and meaningful to service-users whose first language is either Urdu or Polish. This research is being undertaken to help assess cultural validity of the unvalidated ReQoL questionnaire and also a view that translated versions of the questionnaire will eventually be available for use.

The study will involve interviews and focus groups with non-native English speaking service users from South Asian (specifically, Urdu-speaking) and Polish backgrounds. It will involve the gathering of participants' feedback on the questions that make up the unvalidated ReQoL questionnaire. This information will help conclude whether the measure is culturally and linguistically appropriate for use with South Asian and Polish service users and will be used in refining the questions for the final outcome measures by being fed back to the main ReQoL study (both anonymised transcripts and results). The research specifically aims to highlight and amend any issues with the language used, or the inclusion/ exclusion of items on the questionnaire.
