Research summary
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential use of Thromboelastography (TEG) guided blood component requirements, to determine whether the use of TEG can potentially improve patient safety by reducing exposure to unnecessary blood components and to evaluate the cost effectiveness of TEG guided transfusion within a district general hospital. The study will be aimed at reducing the wastage of plasma products as this area has the greatest percentage wastage.
The study will also evaluate the pros and cons of having the TEG analyser situated in the Blood Bank rather than point of care.
Potential benefits to future patients will be reduced donor exposure and the risks accompanying allogenic blood transfusion, minimising harm. Potential benefits to the trust are reduced wastage of blood products, reduced staff time and shorter hospital stays. The study will also look at whether there is a significant difference in the turnaround times of TEG versus traditional laboratory testing.
