  • Research summary

Children can experience anxiety and sub-optimal preparation before they have a planned blood test. There is evidence to show that if children are prepared and have the chance to develop coping strategies for during their procedure, they have a better experience and improved short and long-term outcomes. Xploro is a health information platform, which has been developed with children, parents and health professionals and has been shown in a pilot study to have a positive impact on children’s knowledge levels and anxiety when having planned procedures in hospital. The Xploro team have developed a new blood test module to sit within the information platform.

This project is focussed on gaining insight into the acceptability and perceived usefulness of the Xploro blood test module to children, parents and professionals within an outpatient blood test clinic. The study will also gather information on the willingness of families to be recruited and engage with the data collection materials. Qualitative and quantitative information will be collected from children (n=40-50), parents (n=40-50) and health professionals (n=10-15) in paper data collection booklets administered within the blood clinic. The recruitment and data collection methods and materials have been informed by patient and public involvement.
