Research summary
Title: Bisphosphonates and oral health management in the community- the reality.
Bisphosphonates are prescribed for multiple conditions including osteoporosis. The NICE guidelines require that patients are advised to have a dental health check-up before being commenced on oral bisphosphonates, and regular dental checks while on the medication, to prevent and allow early diagnosis of osteonecrosis of the jaw. Following discussion with both the local GP and Dentist the researchers noted that a large proportion of patients may not be following the advice given. This research intends to clarify patient awareness of the adverse reactions to the medication and the importance of adherence to dental health monitoring and management through a questionnaire based study. The study will target all patients on long term oral bisphosphonates in the sample area. The questionnaire will be completed in the community pharmacy all questionnaires will be given an anonymous code. It is hoped that a 10 week window will ensure a maximum number of participants.
