Research summary
The aim of this study is to evaluate the acceptability, feasibility and fidelity of a behavioural counselling intervention for South Asians trying to quit using smokeless tobacco. This intervention has been developed by adapting an existing counselling intervention for smoking cessation.
The study will take part in England and Pakistan. 32 client participants (16 in each country) will be recruited from NHS Stop Smoking Services (England) and hospital, workplace and community settings (Pakistan). Client participants' pre-quit, quit and post-quit sessions with the cessation advisor will be audio recorded for observation and coding. Client participants will also complete a questionnaire at the pre-quit session and provide a saliva sample (at pre-quit and 6 months post-quit) which is a way of measuring tobacco use. Half of the client participants will be interviewed (3 times, pre-quit, quit and post-quit) to explore their views of the counselling intervention. We will also interview cessation advisors about the delivery of the intervention.
Based on the study findings we will then refine the counselling intervention for smokeless tobacco cessation.
