Research summary
Introduction:
The Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) is a tertiary referral centre for glaucoma and offers a great variety of intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering procedures. There are several reports in the literature on the outcomes of different types of IOP-lowering surgery, but they refer to diverse populations with different characteristics. The fact that the population of Birmingham comprises people of various ethnicities with all types of glaucoma offers an excellent opportunity to study the outcomes of various IOP-lowering surgical techniques on the same population.
Summary of the study:
Retrospective comparative study (by reviewing case notes) on the outcomes and complications of IOP-lowering procedures on glaucoma patients under the care of Mr Imran Masood the Chief Investigator at BMEC through the period
2011-2015
Inclusion criteria:
- Glaucoma patients (all ages, all types of glaucoma) who underwent IOP-lowering theatre procedures through the period 2011-2015
- IOP-lowering procedures to be included: trabeculectomy, glaucoma drainage implant surgery, trans-scleral cyclodiode laser, endoscopic cyclophotocoagulation, goniosynechialysis, istent surgery, hydrus surgery, Xen implant surgery.
Outcomes to be measured:
Primary outcomes:
Success and complications rate - Survival analysis for each IOP-lowering procedure
Comparison of effectiveness of different procedures in lowering IOP
Secondary outcomes:
To identify possible risk factors for failure of different IOP-lowering procedures.REC name
