Research summary
As part of our national network of clinics dedicated to the care of patients with the rare condition Birdshot Chorioretinopathy, we gather a standardised set of clinical data which is shared anonymously between sites for the improvement of clinical care and to enable bench-marking of quality standards across the UK. This is supported by a multi site secure N3-limited clinical database that has been approved under standard NHS governance for information sharing.
It has been recognised by patients and clinical experts that this data-set provides an unparalleled resource for the understanding of the condition. The UK patient support society (Birdshot Uveitis Society) and the body of experts: National Birdshot Research Network, have together proposed this study, Assessment of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy (the ‘Birdshot-ABC’ study), to provide for the analysis of this data and of samples donated to the Birdshot collection in the Human Bio-materials Resource Centre for research purposes. This study will provide the first UK-based longitudinal study of patients with this rare condition and will provide important data to the Birdshot Community regarding the following questions:
1) What is the prevalence of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy within the hospital eye service?
2) What are the risk factors for the development of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy?
3) What is the natural history of Birdshot Chorioretinopathy?
4) What is the impact of treatment on course of disease?
5) What is the burden of treatment?Involvement in this study is voluntary, with patients being asked whether they would like their data, including clinical measures and their existing or future samples, to be included within the study. The data will not include name, date of birth or address.
