Research summary
Knee osteoarthritis is a common disease affecting up to 45% of adults during their lifetime. There are currently no treatment strategies in place which are able to delay the progression of early arthritis to severe and painful joint disease. There is growing evidence that some blood and urine based tests might be helpful in predicting who is at high risk of progressing to early joint failure. This research will aim to identify individuals at high risk of progressing into more advanced and painful knee arthritis by analysing a spectrum of blood, genetic and urine markers associated with tissue degeneration and joint inflammation. This could lead to better stratification of the individuals at risk for future interventions but also help to identify potential pathological pathways as future targets for interventions.
