Research summary
Joint diseases such as osteoarthritis are often difficult to diagnose due to similar symptoms across a range of different diseases. This means that it is difficult to accurately predict what the best course of treatment will be for an individual. This study aims to establish if it is possible that a simple blood test or testing the fluid surrounding the joint (synovial fluid) can accurately diagnose osteoarthritis, allowing the best treatment to be given. Samples from patients with suspected or confirmed osteoarthritis will be analysed to identify if amount of TSG-6, a protein whose activity has been linked to osteoarthritis disease progression, is a useful test for diagnosing the disease.
