Research summary
Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is a significant problem in the UK, affecting seven million people, and is responsible for 25% of early deaths. Current evidence suggests a relationship between ASCVD and increased Lipoprotein a [Lp(a)] concentration. With growing evidence about Lp(a) we anticipate a study focusing on the analytical aspects of Lp(a) measurement which is of significant importance for accurate interpretation of this test. We aim to study the stability of Lp(a) and biological variation (BV) of Lp(a) . We will recruit healthy participants . The main determinant for the length of the study is the collection of blood samples from subjects. Lp(a) stability assessment requires 3 subjects, donation of 20 ml of blood from each and BV study requires 10 subjects who will donate 10 ml of blood for four consecutive weeks. All collected blood samples will be anonymised and separated to obtain serum which will be used to measure Lp(a).
