  • Research summary

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a condition that causes pain and stiffness in the joints, especially the knees and hips. Over 98,000 people undergo primary total knee replacement, and 99,000 undergo primary total hip replacement each year in the UK. However, up to 10-20% of people who have a knee replacement are unhappy with the results, which is much higher than for hip replacements (5-7%). The soft tissue that lines inside the hip and knee joint is different with the knee joint having significantly more lining than the hip, and this lining tissue is known to contribute to inflammation in the joint, which also links to pain/dysfunction.
Emerging evidence suggests that psychological factors, such as anxiety and depression, are associated with dissatisfaction following Knee and hip replacement.
This project will explore how factors such as the degree of inflammation in the joint's soft tissue lining and mental health, including depression/anxiety, are related, and how they in turn could be related to how people feel after surgery. We will collect data from people undergoing knee and hip replacements through surveys, blood tests and biological samples obtained during surgery from the joint lining. Understanding these factors could help improve treatment in the future and provide better outcomes for patients.
