Research summary
Doctors do not yet have reliable ways to predict if a person with mild memory problems will develop dementia. However, research suggests that changes in memory and thinking, brain scans, and blood tests may provide early clues about dementia risk. It is unclear if these tests can be used together in clinics to accurately predict who will develop dementia.
This study will investigate whether a combination of tests can effectively predict dementia in people who visit memory clinics. The tests will include assessments of memory and thinking, brain scans, and blood tests. The research will particularly focus on changes associated with Lewy Body Dementia, where individuals might experience shifts in thinking, movement, or vision. Similar changes in memory, brain structure, and blood markers can be seen in those at risk of Alzheimer's Disease.
The study will involve two main assessments: an initial baseline assessment during the clinic appointment and a follow-up assessment approximately 12 months later. If successful, this approach could allow for earlier dementia diagnosis and treatment, leading to better outcomes for patients.
