  • Research summary

Common mental health disorders have a lifelong course of relapse and remission and can be associated with significant disability. More than half of the 16.2% of adults in the population with a common mental health disorder have mixed depression and anxiety (9% of the population), 4.4% have GAD, 2.3% have depression and approximately 1.5% meet the criteria for other common mental health disorders.

People with common mental health disorders who opt to receive psychological interventions are typically treated in primary care Improving Access to Psychological Treatment (IAPT) services. IAPT services deliver evidence-based interventions within a 'stepped-care' framework, with interventions including one-to-one cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) for depression, generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), social anxiety disorder (SAD) and panic disorder.

Big White Wall is a social purpose private limited company which provides an online intervention service for people experiencing common mental health disorders. Big White Wall provides a choice of psychological interventions for members, which include ‘Live Therapy’ sessions, one-to-one synchronous therapy delivered on a digital platform through video calling, audio or live text communication.

This is a pilot study which aims to compare clinical outcomes from Live Therapy CBT (CBT-LT) and CBT delivered face-to-face (CBT-FtF; treatment as usual) for depression, GAD, SAD and panic disorder, as well as to determine whether Live Therapy CBT is regarded as an acceptable treatment by patients.
