  • Research summary

Chronic pain arising from musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions incurs long-term human suffering and economic burden and, frequently, has its roots in youth. This study will investigate how cognitive factors contribute to disability/functioning in adolescent chronic MSK pain patients. We aim to investigate whether adolescent patients with chronic MSK pain interpret ambiguous pain-related situations as more threatening than ambiguous social situations. We also aim to assess whether patterns of biased interpretations associate with fear and avoidance of potentially painful situations and pain-associated intensity, functioning and disability.

Demographic data, information about pain experiences and impact of pain on functioning in the past 3 months, and an Interpretation Bias Task will be completed by participants with chronic MSK pain. Participants will also complete questionnaires about pain effects on functioning and disability, fear and avoidance of pain, avoidance, disability and distractibility. Five participants will also be interviewed after the interpretation bias task using the think-aloud procedure to confirm the relevance of these items. Assessments will be administered at several time-points to address whether there are any changes over time or in response to treatment.
