Research summary
Will obese pregnant women who participate in the 'Best Start' programme achieve the recommended weight gain of 5–9 kilogrammes (kgs) during their pregnancy compared to women who receive usual care?
The Best Start programme will invite all pregnant women with a BMI ≥30 via their midwife, into a seven week community weight management programme; unless they meet the exclusion criteria. It comprises a series of 7 x 2 hour sessions, delivered at a range of times and by trained Healthy Lifestyle Support Workers employed within the maternity service.
The programme will follow the scripted “Foodwise in Pregnancy” course of nutrition information; practical cooking sessions; and information on low impact exercise e.g. group walks. The programme will also promote breastfeeding, healthy weaning and the importance of play and physical activity. Delivery of the programme will be clinically supervised by a specialist public health dietitian and public health midwife employed within Cwm Taf University Health Board.REC name
