  • Research summary

This is an evaluation study to determine the feasibility of offering New Orleans Intervention Model (NIM) with services as usual, Case Management (CM), for maltreated children coming into care in Croydon, London. This study will also expand on initial exploratory work to test whether randomisation of services is acceptable in England. Both of these interventions aim to improve the mental health of infants who have been maltreated and placed in foster care. NIM provides assessment of the child's key relationships followed by an intervention that is tailored for each family. The aim of NIM is to have the best outcome possible for the child, either recommendation for rehabilitation to birth family or adoption. CM aims to quality assure existing services including signposting families to other services and ensuring regular supportive contact from family social worker. Families recruited to the study will be asked to complete the Attitudes to Randomised Trials Questionnaire (ARTq). Families, their social workers, the judges who make the decisions about care and any other professionals relevant in their care will be interviewed in depth about their experiences as the child comes into care.
