Research summary
This is the full-scale study comparing New Orleans Intervention Model (NIM) with services as usual, Case Management (CM), for maltreated children coming into care. This is a continuation of the Glasgow pilot BeST study. Both of these interventions aim to improve the mental health of infants who have been maltreated and placed in foster care. NIM provides assessment of the child's key relationships followed by an intervention that is tailored for each family. The aim of NIM is to have the best outcome possible for the child, either recommendation for rehabilitation to birth family or adoption. CM aims to quality assure exisitng services including sign-posting families to other serviceds and ensuring regular supportive contact from family social worker. Families recruited to the study will have 3 study visits. The principle measure used to evaluate change will be the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), other measures will include quality of infant's attachment with the current caregiver and cognitive functioning. Longer term follow-up will be via data linkage to routine datasets.
