Research summary
Shortsighted and longsighted patients with no or very levels of astigmatism are fitted with spherical contact lenses, while those with medium to high levels of astigmatism need to be fitted with more complex design toric contact lenses, which also correct astigmatism. The perception of some practitioners is that toric contact lens fitting success is inferior to that of spherical contact lenses due to lower comfort and poorer vision. Hence, whereas practitioners are proactive at offering contact lenses to non-contact lens wearers requiring a spherical correction they are far less proactive when it comes to neophyte astigmats requiring toric contact lenses, adversely affecting the latter population the benefits of contact lens correction.
Recent studies have demonstrated that the concerns listed above are in fact not founded and that toric and spherical contact lens performances are similar. A study tracking comfort over 10 hours of wear of MyDay® 1-Day toric contact lenses fitted to current toric contact lens wearers and MyDay® 1- Day asphere fitted to current spherical contact lens wearers revealed an identical comfort for the two contact lens types. Another study comparing the ease of fitting and visual performance of a novel multifocal toric contact lens fitted to astigmatic presbyopes to that of MyDay® multifocal fitted to non-astigmatic presbyopes revealed similarly good performance for the two contact lens types.
The rationale for the proposed study is to demonstrate that fitting neophyte astigmats with MyDay® 1-Day toric is as successful as fitting neophyte non or very low astigmats with MyDay® 1-Day asphere.
