  • Research summary

    Rationale:
Advancing technology means that access to diagnostic radiological images such as X-rays and CT scans is becoming more readily available. The literature recognises that there are benefits available from such access, but suggests a potential requirement for provision of additional information to enable benefit realisation.
To date, there has been little investigation in the UK of the implications of increasing access to images, what benefits or risks it may bring, or how it could be managed. This study seeks to address this gap and provide a strategy for facilitating stakeholder realisation of benefits through image access.
    Methodology:
The study will be undertaken in 2 phases. The first phase will utilise methods such as questionnaires and interviews to gather opinions from both expert clinicians and lay persons regarding perceived benefits and risks surrounding access to diagnostic images. Additionally, it will seek to identify the needs and preferences of these stakeholders in enabling the realisation of these benefits through such access, whilst mitigating identified risks.
The data gathered in the initial phase will then be used to design a prototype interpretive layer for enabling individuals to realise the identified benefits. This prototype will then be utilised in the subsequent phase.
The second phase will seek to test the prototype interpretive layer against relevant outcomes based on the perceived benefits and risks identified previously. This will be achieved through demonstration of the prototype to expert clinicians and lay persons alongside the gathering of data from these participants through methods such as questionnaires and interviews.
    Expected outcomes & contribution:
It is expected that this research will result in, inter alia:
1.Clarification & expansion of our understanding of the role and value of radiological images.
2.Clarification of the extent of stakeholder requirements regarding radiological images.
3.Recommendations for fulfilling stakeholder requirements regarding radiological images.
