Research summary
There is a limited body of research exploring the inpatient Children and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHs) experience, yet it is used annually for approximately 1% of children accessing CAMHs during periods of acute mental health crises. The environment offers a drastically different to normal context for adolescent development and has different expectations of responsibility and maturity for those who are cared within it. Most cared within CAMHs inpatient settings are of adolescent age: a time when adulthood identity is beginning to form. Previous research has sought to investigate the views of those within the inpatient context or within forensic contexts but has not gone on to explore the retrospective accounts and responses after receiving care from inpatient environments. This research hopes to understand how those who have experienced an inpatient CAMHs unit perceive it to be impactful on their identity development. The research looks to answer the questions of 1) What function does the story of inpatient CAMHs serve the individual in recovery? 2) How do people hold onto identity (both as individuals and relational people) in the context of previously experiencing inpatient CAMHs services?
Those who are aged 18-35 and have previously experienced an inpatient CAMHs unit will eligible for the study, primarily recruited from Complex Emotional Needs Services and Integrated Recovery Team within the Humber region, along with social media, and will be asked to participate in an interview with the researcher to explore the above question. The study will be completed by September 2023.
