Research summary
There is substantial and consistent evidence that those identifying as LGBT experience increased incidence of poorer mental and physical health and significant discrimination in health and social care.
Methods of education and training for staff in the health and social sector show varying measures of success and uptake. There is evidence, too, that the effects of training seeking to challenge unconscious bias towards minority groups may, if not actually reinforcing existing prejudices, be short lived. There is also evidence of cultural and religious ‘pushback’ from some health and social care staff on LGBT acceptance and equality. This is a Focus Group Study, whose membership will bring together (in separate groups) people with different hospital staff roles, and representatives from LGBT patient groups, recruited via local LGBT organisations. They will create together a behaviour change intervention or interventions to improve the response to LGBT patients accessing hospital care locally.
A Participatory Action Research methodology will be used to establish the structure and format of the group activity. The Behaviour Change Wheel will be used as a template for all stages of the research process; it will also be used to analyse and code Focus Group themes and identify the development stages and final evaluation of the co-created behaviour change intervention(s) together with the necessary policy changes required to ensure successful implementation.
