  • Research summary

This research project will seek better understanding of whether and how clinical staff within the NHS who are undertaking invasive procedures use tools and processes that are intended to support the HEE Patient Safety agenda (e.g. checklists and rules). It will then employ that better understanding for the further improvement of practice.

This research is funded by NHS Health Education England (Wessex), and research participants will be recruited from clinical staff working at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust who work in teams that undertake invasive procedures during Surgery, Interventional Radiology and Endoscopy.

The research methodologies used during the project will be:

    1) A Literature Review of occupational rule-following within healthcare in general, and specifically in relation to invasive procedures.
    2) Documentary analysis of governmental and regulatory framework of rules, and local Trust policies and guidelines for, invasive procedures.
    3) An online, anonymous survey (the SCORE Survey), sent out to approximately 700 clinical staff who work within teams that undertake invasive procedures at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
    4) Observation of team practice (approx. 120 hours) within three clinical settings (Surgery, Interventional Radiology and Endoscopy).
    5) Another online, anonymous survey (the BARDIP survey), sent out to approximately 330 clinical staff who work specifically within teams that undertake invasive procedures during Surgery, Interventional Radiology or Endoscopy conducted at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
    6) Semi-structured, one-to-one interviews with 30 clinical staff who work within those specific clinical teams (length of each interview approx. 30 minutes).
