Research summary
This study aims to explore how binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa are identified and managed in primary care in the UK (Phase 1) and propose recommendations on how to improve it (Phase 2). This study is being conducted because it is not known how individuals are identified and managed with these eating disorders in primary care and because we know from prior research and the literature that these eating disorders are being overlooked despite them being very common. This piece would offer evidence for future research on new treatment options, policies and screening tools, which would be of relevance and importance to patients and the public.
Individuals eligible for this study would be comprised of primary care professionals, including general practitioners, psychological wellbeing practitioners, dentists, nurse practitioners, community pharmacists, commissioners, and individuals who identify as suffering from the symptoms of binge eating disorder or bulimia nervosa.
Both phases of this study will be conducted online, with the University of Exeter being the main site of the study. The study will last 18 months, and participants may undergo several studies. In Phase 1, participants will be invited to take part in an online survey in which they will be asked about the practices used or experienced in relation to the identification and management of binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa. At the end of this survey, participants would be invited to take part in a focus group to discuss how could the identification and management of binge eating disorder and bulimia nervosa be improved (Phase 2). Not every participant who takes part in the survey and shows interest in the next phase will participate in focus groups. At the end of the focus groups, participants will be invited to take part in an interactive workshop to finalise the recommendation for change.REC name
