Research summary
Patients with lung cancer may have to undergo difficult and unpleasant treatments where they have to go to hospital multiple times. Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) may have to manage complicated treatments at home in addition to attending multiple appointments at hospital or at their general practice. Thus, the process of undergoing treatment may feel like work to patients and their family members/friends who support them (informal care-givers). This study aims to understand the experiences of treatment for patients living with COPD and lung cancer and their informal caregivers. We have already looked systematically at the international literature in order to understand this. We now intend to observe healthcare professionals and patients in outpatient clinics and to interview patients and healthcare professionals to explore this further. This study is being undertaken as a doctoral project for the degree of PhD in Health Sciences.
