Data collection arrangements
The Barts Centre for Squamous Cancer tissue bank will provide a valuable resource for Barts Health and Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) researchers, by storing samples and data from research studies at these institutions so that they can be used in future research. Samples will mainly be from a type of cancer called squamous cancer, that often occurs in the mouth, on the skin, and in the oesophagus, alongside some other tumour types from these anatomical regions. Pre-malignant lesions, that may become tumours, will also be collected alongside surrounding normal tissue. Many research studies at these institutions are collecting, or have previously collected, tissue and data for these tumours with informed consent, and this proposal for a central repository will greatly strengthen the value of these specimens.
Research programme
The proposal is that this bank will support a range of oral, cutaneous and oesophageal cancer research programs at QMUL and Barts Health, including programs conducted in collaboration with other institutions. This will include basic research to understand the biology of cancer, translational studies aimed at improving cancer diagnosis and treatment, and research supporting clinical studies to improve clinical practice.
