Data collection arrangements
The Research Database will store routinely collected clinical data from patients aged 16 years and over who are referred to or managed by cardio-oncology, oncology, or haemato-oncology services at Barts Health NHS Trust as part of standard NHS care.
Data held within the database will include demographic information, medical history, cardiovascular risk factors, cancer diagnoses, cancer treatment details, medications, cardiovascular investigations (including imaging and laboratory results), clinical management information, and longitudinal outcomes such as cardiovascular events and mortality. No biological samples will be collected or stored.
Data have been collected prospectively since 2016 as part of routine clinical care and are recorded within Trust-approved clinical systems and the existing cardio-oncology clinical database. The database will continue to be populated using information generated through routine clinical care only. No additional tests, procedures, questionnaires, or patient contact will occur for research purposes.
For research use, authorised members of the direct clinical care team will extract and pseudo-anonymise relevant data before it is made available to researchers.
Research programme
The database will support a broad programme of observational research in cardio-oncology, focusing on improving understanding of the cardiovascular effects of cancer therapies in real-world NHS populations. Research supported by the database may include studies examining patient characteristics, cancer treatment exposures, cardiovascular complications, predictors of cardiotoxicity, long-term outcomes, and the diagnostic value of imaging and biomarkers. The database may also support service evaluation and exploratory analyses to inform future hypothesis-driven research. The database will primarily support researchers within Barts Health NHS Trust and partner academic institutions, including Queen Mary University of London. Access may also be provided to external NHS, academic, or commercial researchers where proposed projects align with the aims of the database and receive appropriate scientific, ethical, and governance approvals. The overall aim is to generate real-world evidence that improves patient safety, informs clinical practice, and supports future research in cardio-oncology.
