  • Data collection arrangements

Samples/data to be stored and collection/consent arrangements (maximum 200 words): This Bank will consent patients for use of samples of metastatic breast cancer for research. Samples are stored in secure, purpose made facilities at Charterhouse Square and Barts Hospital, accessible only to Tissue Bank staff. Access is via swipe card. All samples are kept in locked storage, either freezers, Liquid Nitrogen Tanks or storage cabinets. All related paperwork, including consent forms, are stored in locked filing cabinets in the same area. Patients are consented for storage and use of tissue/blood samples for research along with associated clinicopathological, imaging and treatment data.
Data is retrieved from the electronic patient record and stored in a purpose made database which is password protected and accessible only by authorised tissue bank staff.

  • Research programme

The Breast Metastatic Tissue Bank is designed to support a broad range of research into metastatic breast disease. Research may involve analysis of DNA, RNA proteins, cells or tissues to assess factors involved in the spread of breast cancer and factors influencing response to treatment. Each project is reviewed by the Tissue Access Committee for suitability and ethical compliance. Data from research projects is returned to the Bank to avoid future duplication and enhance the value of the samples. Researchers from the medical, biomedical, cell biology and bioengineering fields may be involved in use of samples from the Bank, with the aim of better understanding the factors that impact on the transition from primary to metastatic breast cancer, and metastatic tumour growth. A portion of all samples stored are allocated to The Breast Cancer Now Tissue, of which we are a member. This bank is run under the same guidelines as the Barts Cancer Institute Bank.
