Research summary
Despite its health benefits, research suggests that just three percent of Gypsies and Travellers breastfeed their infants.
Since 2010, the researcher has been the health visitor for a small community of Gypsies and Travellers who receive health services from Cwm Taf Morgannwg (CTM) local health board. The research question is: What opinions do Gypsies and Travellers have about breastfeeding. The Qualitative research will interview up to 12 female (aged 18 and over) participants. They will be interviewed in their own home, with questions from a topic guide developed with themes identified from a literature review and from the Baby Friendly Initiative (BFI)' Having Meaningful Conversations with Mothers'. The objective of the research is to investigate the barriers they face to initiating and sustaining breastfeeding, explore their views on what may encourage them to breastfeed, and formulate recommendations on strategy needed from health professionals to increase breastfeeding in the Gypsy and Traveller community. Interviews will take place June to July 2024.REC name
