Research summary
Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer among women globally. Attending regular breast screening can help to detect cancer at an earlier stage and reduce deaths. However, women from Ethnic Minority backgrounds are known to have lower attendance rates. Greater Manchester is home to a high Pakistani population but there is still little evidence around the reasons for low breast screening uptake in women from Pakistani communities in Greater Manchester. As part of a PhD research study, Pakistani women in Greater Manchester will be interviewed about the barriers and facilitators to breast screening uptake, with a complex intervention being developed to improve this. This study will help us to understand why some women accept their breast screening invitation and why others do not. It will help us to include members of the community to create an intervention that will give women the confidence to attend their screening appointments.
There is also limited evidence on the views of primary healthcare providers and how they are able to assist this group in attending breast screening.
Although the focus of this study is on Pakistani women, the outcomes have the potential to be adapted and used in other Ethnic Minority groups.
The duration of the study in total will be one year and participants will be receive a thank you gift for their participation in the study.REC name
