  • Research summary

In 2023, Wales had the highest diabetes prevalence in the UK, with 1 in 13 adults affected, most of whom have Type 2 Diabetes. This number is expected to rise to 1 in 11 by 2035. Diabetes-related complications, hospital admissions, and premature deaths impose significant financial costs, with type 2 diabetes-related care costing the UK over £21.8 billion annually.

The Tackling Diabetes Together initiative, led by Public Health Wales working across partners in Wales, aims to prevent diabetes and improve outcomes for those living with the condition. Early diagnosis and ongoing support for managing the condition, including regular health monitoring and lifestyle changes, are essential to prevent complications. However, many people with diabetes face challenges engaging with healthcare services or adopting strategies to live well with the condition. Factors influencing this include social circumstances, cultural beliefs, personal motivation, and capability.

This study seeks to understand these challenges and their impact on long-term diabetes management. It will recruit and interview adults living with diabetes in Wales and a range of health care professionals and explore how social, cultural, and environmental factors, alongside healthcare professional and patient behaviors, influence self-management and engagement with health services. The research will use theoretical models for behavioural insights to examine the lived experiences of people with Type 2 Diabetes in Wales.
The findings will help shape strategies to improve engagement with healthcare services and support effective self-management, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for individuals living with diabetes in Wales.
