  • Research summary

Within the UK, there are around 5000 to 6000 new referrals to prosthetic services each year. Previous research has found that approximately 52% of lower-limb amputees fall each year, and 75% of these fall more than once. Exercise interventions have been previously recommended for falls prevention amongst elderly patients, and previous research preceding this application by the current research team have found encouraging results amongst lower-limb amputees.

The aim of the project is to investigate the perceived barriers and motivating factors to participation in exercise or physical activity, from both lower-limb amputees and the healthcare professionals who treat them. By seeking the opinions of both sets of participants we can begin to understand where there are areas of agreement and disagreement. Opinions will be gathered through focus groups, one for healthcare professionals, one for lower-limb amputees who are physically active, and one for lower-limb amputees who are not physically active.

Previous qualitative research of the lower-limb amputee patient group has covered a range of areas such as prosthetic satisfaction and psychological adjustment following amputation. To our knowledge only one previous study has investigated barriers and facilitators to exercise among lower-limb amputees, and this took place in The Netherlands, and was not representative of patients who had their amputation experience through the NHS.
