  • Research summary

VLUs are recurring open wounds on the lower leg. VLUs are costly to treat and burdensome for patients. VLUs occur due to chronic venous insufficiency. This means diseased and damaged leg veins don’t pump blood up the legs and towards the heart as well as they should do. Small nicks and cuts on the affected legs can, rather than heal, become large, open wounds. Because of this systematic cause, people with healed VLUs are at risk of recurring ulcers. VLU recurrence rates are high in the literature.
