Research summary
Bariatric surgery leads to changes in hormones secreted by the gut after eating. These hormones are referred to as gut hormones and they are known to lower blood sugar levels and decrease appetite. We want to explore the mechanisms by which bile acids can also increase gut hormones and how this may then improve blood glucose control in patients with diabetes. Our pilot study confirmed that after a single dose of oral bile acids, gut hormone levels increased in healthy volunteers. We would now like to confirm that this effect is also found in patients with type 2 diabetes when these bile acids are given in multiple doses.
To do this we will randomise patients into three groups receiving either ursodeoxycholic acid, chenodeoxycholic acid (both are types of bile acids) or placebo for 6 weeks.
