Research summary
Diabetes and obesity are amongst the leading causes of heart disease. In the heart,
these consitions are associated with many effects including reduced blood flow and
scarring which are thought to be important in the development of obesity- and diabetes-related diabetic cardiomyopathy. Weight-loss surgery has a dramatic effect on both weight and diabetes and therefore has the potential to improve heart health. We will enrol patients with and without diabetes who have decided to have weight-loss
surgery. Before and six months after surgery, they will have a scan of their heart alongside body measurements (waist/hip circumference, weight, height, and body
composition analysis), blood and urine tests. The scan allows us accurately to measure blood flow, scarring and other aspects of heart function, the other tests to measure blood sugar control and other factors that may be linked, such as hormone levels, body fat and weight.REC name
