  • Research summary

Exploring Therapeutic Mechanisms of Change in an Art Therapy Group for Young People with Mental Health Difficulties at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead.

The mental health of young people in England is a serious cause for concern.
While there is some evidence relating to the usefulness of Art Therapy groups (see attached protocol for further details) - the process of how therapeutic change happens in group art therapy with young people in an NHS mental health service is just beginning to be explored.
The proposal is for two art therapists in an NHS mental health service, named the ‘Children and Young People’s Service’ (CYPS) to facilitate 3 time limited (12 sessions per group) therapy groups for approximately 6-10 young people aged between 12 and 18 at Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. The Young People would continue to have access to support from the wider CYPS Service during the project for their presenting difficulties. These may include mental health problems such as depression/low mood, anxiety and problems with self-harm.
Participants would spend time looking at public exhibitions at the Baltic and making art and talking in a separate room at the Baltic (which would not be accessible to the general public).
The clients may have the option of exhibiting their art in a public space at the Baltic at the end of the project.
The sessions would be videoed and the data analysed by the research team using Grounded Theory. The Group members will be given the option of being involved in viewing and analysing video material: thereby contributing to the research.
The Art Therapy Group will involve two art therapists and an artist (from the Baltic Gateshead ‘stable’ of artists who are experienced in community art projects). All three will be present in the actual sessions.
