Research summary
This study wishes to assess the bacteria present in decayed teeth. Teeth that are extracted are normally disposed of as clinical waste. We wish to retain these teeth and sample the dental decay to identify the bacteria responsible for the decay. this will be achieved through microbiological assessment of the material. We aim to identify the types and proportion of bacteria responsible for the decay and compare it with other known caries bacterial profiles. As a sample control, we will take a sample of dental plaque from the contra-lateral side of the jaw for bacteriological assessment. Once the decay/specimen is sampled and assessed these teeth will be disposed of in the normal way, as clinical waste.
