Research summary
We are proposing to use surplus specimens from patients received for reference bacterial pathogen confirmation for metagenomics - this will enable obtaining more molecular information from the specimens than is possible from current methodologies. For example, for molecular typing of Legionella species - through metagenomics - it is theoretically possible to obtain sequence data of more genes from the infecting bacterial pathogen. This information is to be used for service development and improvements offered by the national bacterial reference department.
