Research summary
Patients routinely undergo invasive stimulation of the nervous system as part of treatment for a variety of conditions including chronic pain, Parkinson’s disease, and ‘movement disorders’. Recently evidence has come to light that stimulation in this manner may have effects on the autonomic nervous system. This may imply that stimulation affects the autonomic nervous system (parameters such as blood pressure, heart rate and sweating) as well as their originally intended indications. We wish to investigate this possibility by testing parameters in patients undergoing these procedures for therapeutic reasons. Our hope is that this will lead to further understanding of the control of the autonomic nervous system, and whether it can be modulated by invasive stimulation.
