Research summary
This is a randomized single blinded parallel study to investigate the effect of physiological modulation of the autonomic nervous system on oesophageal pain hypersensitivity in patients with non-erosive reflux disease (NERD). We aim to evaluate the effect of slow deep breathing and sham breathing on oesophageal pain hypersensitivity in patients with NERD. The primary endpoint is the difference in lag time to perception of first sensation between slow deep breathing and sham breathing following oesophageal acid perfusion. We aim to recruit 80 participants.
