Research summary
Recent research suggests that both type 1 and type 2 diabetes may be more common in autistic populations (e.g., Dhanesakara et al., 2023). Although the reasons for this association remain unclear, autistic traits may make aspects of diabetes self-management more challenging. For example, sensory sensitivities may make wearing devices or injecting insulin difficult, and communication differences may affect communication with healthcare professionals. However, much of this evidence is anecdotal or patient-reported, and empirical research is limited.
This study will investigate whether higher autistic trait scores are associated with differences in diabetes management, and which aspects of management may be most affected. Rather than focusing solely on individuals with a formal autism diagnosis, we will assess autistic traits using a questionnaire. This approach recognises autism as a spectrum and includes individuals who experience elevated traits without a diagnosis. It also allows a more nuanced understanding of which specific areas of diabetes self-management may present difficulties.
The study will focus on young adults, as the transition to adulthood can present additional challenges in managing long-term health conditions. Participants will be 18- to 25-year-olds with type 1 diabetes attending the Young Adult Diabetes Clinic at the Royal Berkshire Hospital.
Autistic trait scores will be compared with five diabetes-related measures: Problem Areas in Diabetes questionnaire score, Gold score (hypoglycaemia awareness), most recent HbA1c result, time in blood glucose range, and appointment attendance. Identifying any associations may help clarify whether higher autistic trait scores relate to specific management challenges. Findings could inform future research and service adaptations, potentially improving patient support and clinical outcomes.
