Research summary
It is has been established that people with autism are a high risk group for experiencing suicidality and dying by suicide. At present, there is no meaningful guidance to help carers and professionals who support these individuals to identify suicidality and appropriately discuss these feelings with people who have complex communication needs. This research will complete focus groups (or interviews if needed to meet participant's needs) with carers and professionals who have identified and discussed feelings of sucidiality with people with a diagnosis of autism. This will include carers (any individual who completes a supporting role to the individual with autism, including family, friends and community members), professionals working in the voluntary sector, and in statutory support services. The aim of the study will be to explore how these individuals are currently identifying suicidality, and discussing it with the people they support.
