  • Research summary

Why? - This study is an investigation into the audiological testing methods for children that present with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). It focuses on sensory characteristics of ASD that may negatively impact the ability to perform audiological tests, thus effecting the child’s overall care and management. The purpose of this investigation will be to generate a pre-assessment questionnaire aimed at highlighting the issues which may affect testing, in order to help clinicians create the necessary testing environment. We are hoping that this will allow testing of children with ASD to run more efficiently and enable accurate measurement, while keeping care for the child at the forefront.

What? – This investigation will involve the trial of a pre-assessment questionnaire generated by the research team, and an associated feedback session with participants. The questionnaire is intended to be brief and easily understandable, especially for those not familiar with audiological practice. The feedback session will involve a discussion of the participants feelings and opinions towards the trial questionnaire, concerns, personal experiences and any personal input. It is designed to highlight issues that should be included in the questionnaire, for the researcher to then amend and produce a final questionnaire at the end of the study that is useful in audiology clinics.

Who? - For this investigation we will be focused on children from the ages of 5-16 with a formal diagnosis of autism, with the parents/caregivers of said child being the participant in the study.

Where? - The sites for data collection will be Macclesfield District General Hospital, The Seashell Trust and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
