Research summary
Prostate cancer is a serious medical condition. The NICE guidelines for prostate cancer states that “healthcare professionls should support men and their partners or carers in making treatment decisions, taking into account the effects on quality of life as well as survival.“ A randomised controlled trial using decision navigators showed that patients who used decision navigation has less regret about their decision, likely due to better understanding of the treatment. Unfortunately decision navigators are costly and currently NHS lothian are unable to fund this intervention. A lower cost intervention is recording the outpatient “bad news“ visit enabling patients to recall more of the consultation at their convenience. This study is trying to establish whether this intervention reduces patient regret after the procedure and whether it is associated with a better quality of life than no having the intervention.
