Research summary
We plan to collect sound recordings over a period of 24 hours from individuals aged 50 and above with cough and:
(1) Normal smokers with healthy lungs
(2) Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) (subjects at high risk of lung cancer)
(3) Other (non-COPD) chronic lung disease (subjects at high risk of lung cancer)
(4) Lung cancer.
Participants will be recruited from Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) and/or New Victoria Hospital (NVH) (both part of NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC)). They will be asked to wear an mp3 recording device for 24 hours and to provide demographic and clinical information that is relevant to the study (from hospital records and the clinical team). Anonymised recordings will be sent to Kings College Hospital (KCH, London) for processing (1 second cough clips will be automatically extracted using a special computer program). Anonymous cough clips and full recordings will be sent to the University of West Scotland (UWS) where sound specialists will analyse the cough clips to look for unique or distinct cough patterns associated with lung cancer.REC name
