Research summary
This research will look at patients aged forty to seventy five years old who have recently suffered from Myocardial Infarction or Angina and as a consequence have received either Coronary Bypass Graft Surgery or Percutaneous Coronary Intervention as treatment in the last six months. These patients will be recruited from the Bridgend & Neath/Port Talbot Cardiac Rehabilitation Service and must meet all the inclusion criteria to be included in the study. The study will initially look at whether patients' causal attributions and coping strategies predict their psychological adjustment to the illness. Secondly, it will be investigated whether there are there differences between patients that have undergone CABG and PCI in their adjustment post-surgery. Thirdly, the research will investigate any gender differences between these variables and see whether attribution, coping and psychological adjustment to illness affect cardiac rehabilitation uptake and maintenance. This information will be collected though using three questionnaires posted directly to the patients' homes.
