Research summary
An increasing number of young people present to gender identity clinics at a younger age (Clarke & Spiliadis, 2019; Chen & Simons, 2018) and medical transitioning risks impairing fertility (Hudson et al., 2018). Nahata, Tishelman, Caltabellotta and Quinn (2017) noted the low fertility preservation (FP) among transgender adolescents and called for more research to understand parenthood goals among transgender youth and explore the impact of gender dysphoria on decision-making about FP. This project therefore aims to investigate transgender young people’s (YP) views on parenthood and fertility and the processes involved when deciding to preserve fertility or not. \n\nThis project is novel because previous studies have been retrospective and have not been conducted in real time when young transgender people are currently considering the decision or have recently taken the decision. Interviews will be conducted with approximately ten transgender and/or gender-diverse young people. A Thematic Analysis (TA) approach will be used to analyse interview data, to identify key themes that will aim to improve service provision for this group and expand knowledge in this under researched area.
