Research summary
Electronic cigarettes (ECs) have becomes increasingly popular in the UK. They are now reported to be the main method used by smokers to help them to quit smoking. Among non-pregnant smokers, qualitative work and controlled trials have been conducted about ECs but the only research on this topic among pregnant smokers is one survey conducted in the US. As the first step in a process that will lead on to a national survey and clinical trials we wish to use qualitative work (i.e., interviews) to explore pregnant smokers and recently pregnant smokers attitudes to electronic cigarettes.
Participants will be recruited in a variety of ways (through hospital antenatal clinics, stop smoking services, vaping forums, and internet sites) in the Glasgow, Leicester, Nottingham and London. Women who are interested will receive a patient information sheet and will give verbal consent to be interviewed (for 30 to 40 minutes) by a researcher over the telephone on single occasion.REC name
