  • Research summary

This work forms the qualitative strand of the ESTEEM trial which aims to compare in pregnant women with metabolic risk factors, the effect of a simple, targeted diet (Mediterranean, including olive oil and nuts, composed within a culturally appropriate meal plan) vs usual antenatal dietary advice in reducing per-eclampsia.
This work forms the basis of a PhD.

Semi-structured interviews of women and their partners will be used to gather information about their experiences of the ESTEEM dietary intervention. These interviews will be carried out separately, during the third trimester of pregnancy. Information will also be collected from key health care professionals who have knowledge of the intervention and have insight into how women experience the intervention, by using focus groups. Data will be collected, transcribed and analysed using the framework approach (Ritchie & Spencer 1994). This information will be looked at in the structured way mentioned above to provide information about how the dietary intervention is experienced and to find out what influences the decisions people make, about food. Therefore, we will capture the views of women and others involved in the intervention to help build a clearer understanding of how this works.

This study will be useful to develop more suitable dietary support for pregnant women and their families with health issues in pregnancy.
